Painting Competition on Energy Conservation for School Children

The competition is held in three stages, namely, School, State and National Level since 2005 to create awareness amongst school children on energy conservation. The students of 4th to 9th Standard are covered in the scheme and painting competition is held in 29 States and 7 UTs.

At the School level, Principal of Schools selects 2 best paintings and sends the same to State Nodal Officer. A jury is constituted at State level having State Education representation, which selects 50 Children from each Category. On the designated day (15th November,2014 in the current year), State level Painting Competition is held and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Winners of Category A are invited for National level Painting Competition on 12th December every year. Category B is terminated at State level and National level winners are selected from the State Level paintings.

In the year 2014, 60.17 lakh students participated in comparison to 45.07 lakh students in 2013, registering an increase of 33% over previous year. 29 States/ UTs have surpassed student’s participation figures of year 2013.

National Energy Conservation Awards

The annual energy conservation awards recognize innovation and achievements in energy conservation by the industries, buildings, zonal railways, state designated agencies, thermal power stations, & electricity distribution companies; and raise awareness that energy conservation plays a big part in India’s response to reducing global warming through energy savings. The scheme has motivated industry and other establishment to adopt energy efficiency measures.

The awards scheme has been in operation since 1991. Hon’ble President of India, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and Hon’ble Union Minister of Power have been the Chief guest of the functions held in past and presented the awards to winners.

Selection Process: An inter-disciplinary Energy Conservation Award Committee under the Chairmanship of Secretary (Power) decides the award winners, with members drawn from Ministry of Power, Central Electricity Authority, National Productivity Council (NPC), and from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which also provides the administrative and technical support to the committee. The Ministry of Power (MOP) has also set up a Technical Sub-Committee to assist Award Committee in the finalization of Awards.

Awards: The Energy Conservation Award has 5 types of awards, and a brief of the same is presented below:

First PrizeFirst prizes is proposed to be given in each sub-sector in the form of a gold plated trophy, bearing plaque with appropriate citation on such awards

Second PrizeSecond prizes is proposed to be given in each sub-sector in the form of a silver plated trophy, bearing plaque with appropriate citation on such awards.

Certificate of Merit – The third prize will be in the form of “Certificate of Merit”

Top Rank AwardA unit getting the First Position for the third year in a row will be eligible for a “Top Rank Award” for that year.

Excellence Award -The unit eligible for Top Rank Award for 3rd year in a row would be given the highest prize, namely “Excellence Award” (instead of Top Rank Award) in recognition of its consistent performance.

Response in EC Award 2014 scheme was quite encouraging. In the current year, 1008 units participated against 829 in 2013, and participation level is 21.6 % higher than that of the previous year. This is a landmark achievement in the history of EC Award scheme.

The Award Committee under the Chairpersonship of Secretary (Power), Ministry of Power will finalize the winners of EC Award on 28th November 2014.
